Guide to the 6121JFIC

What is the 6121JFIC?

     The 1961-2021 Japanese General Fiction Corpus (6121JFIC) is a collection of 217 samples of 5,000-letter excerpts taken from various Japanese fiction works appearing in three kinds of well-known monthly literary magazines: Bungakukai (Bungei Shunju Ltd.), Gunzo (Kodansha Ltd.) and Shincho (Shinchosha Publishing Co. Ltd.) published in 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2021.

     6121 JFIC also includes English translations of the original works, which are automatically generated by two AI translation systems: DeepL (R) developed by DeepL Gmbh and Minna No Jido Honyaku@Textra(R) developed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT).

     6121JFIC was developed for the purposes of investigating the chronological changes seen in the modern Japanese language over 60 years and also comparing the literary images and mindscapes appearing in Japanese fictions with those in English fictions published at the same periods.

     The sampling scheme of the 6121JFIC is basically comparable to that of Brown Corpus, which is an archetypal snapshot corpus of American English. Thus, users can compare the English translations included in the 6121JFIC with the English fictional works of the category "K" (General Fiction) included in the corpora such as Brown (1961, US), Frown (1992, US), Crown (2009, UK), LOB (1961, UK), FLOB (1991, UK), BE06 (2006, UK), and CLOB (2009 , UK).

    6121JFIC has been developed by Dr. Shin Ishikawa (Kobe University). This project is supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant 20K20699.

Prior to the release of the corpus, the 6121JFIC development team discussed with the copyright management sections of Bungakukai (Bungei Shunju Ltd.), Gunzo (Kodansha Ltd.) and Shincho (Shinchosha Publishing Co. Ltd.), as well as the copyright division of The Japan Writers Association (JWA) and confirmed that this project does not infringe the right of the copyright holders. Notes:
JWA's comment was received on May 10, 2021. Then, the corpus development team sent the first letter, which explains the aim and the outline of the project and includes a list of the works included in the corpus, to the editing sections of three literary magazines on August 17, 2021. Next, the team sent the second letter, which introduces the details of the online corpus retrieval systems, to them on December 18, 2021. No objections were made by the three magazines.

The code includes three elements: Year - Magazine - Serial Number. Magazine titles are shown with two-letter codes: BG--Bungakukai (文學界), GZ--Gunzo (群像), and SN--Shincho (新潮). 1961-BG-02, for example, represents the second work taken from the 1961 January Issue of Bungakukai.

【JFICのテキストデータ構造】
・国立国語研究所が言う「短単位」を１語の基準とします。In the JFIC system, a word (token) is defined as a "short-unit word" (SUW).
・JFICのデータは，短単位ごとに切れて保存されており，短単位要素の間にはセパレータ（縦棒）が挿入されています。A separator is added between adjacent SUWs.

【簡単な検索】Simple Query
1) 調査しようとする単語（SUW）を検索ボックスに記入します。Enter a word (SWU) in the query box.
（例）まま　→　まま

2) ２語（厳密に言えば2つの「短単位」）の連鎖を検索する場合は半角スペースをはさみます。 If you enter A [space] B, you get the collocation of A and B.

3) OR検索をするには，半角の縦棒をはさみます。If you enter A|B, you get A or B.

【品詞情報を使った検索】POS Query
・品詞ボタン（POS）を押して，助詞・動詞・名詞・形容詞・形状詞・感動詞・接尾辞・補助記号・記号　がそれぞれ選択可能です。形状詞とはいわゆる形容動詞に準ずる品詞です。By pressing the POS button and choosing a POS type, that POS code is automatically entered in the query box.

1) 検索ボックスにPOSコードだけを入れると，その品詞のすべての語が検索されます。If you enter a POS code alone in the query box, you get all the words belonging to that POS type.
（例）　 [感動詞*]　→感動詞に分類されるすべての語が同時に検索されます。「ああ」「ほら」「あの」「おお「いや」など。

2) POSコード [半角space] 単語　と入れると，ある品詞の後に特定の語が連接するものが検索できます。If you enter a POS code, space, and a word (SUW), you get the collocation of any word belong to that POS type and the specific word.
（例）　[名詞-固有名詞*] [半角space] が　→　「山田が」「日本が」など，固有名詞＋が　が検索されます。
　
3) 単語の後に [半角ピリオド] を入れ，そのあとにPOSコードを入れると，当該語のうち，指定した品詞で使用されているものだけが検索されます。If you enter a word (SUW), "." (period), and a POS code, you get the words used as that particular POS type.

Lemmatization

You can choose "word form" (play just for "play" and is just for "is") or "lemma" (play for "play," "plays," "played," "playing," and be for "is,""am," "are," "was," "were," "be," "been," "being" etc). By choosing a lemma, you can analyze the vocabulary from a more generalized viewpoint. Meanwhile, if you are interested in the difference between "is" and "was," for example, you should not choose a lemma. When analyzing a Japanese text, "lemma" refers to morphemes (語彙素 goiso). For example, the frequencies of "し(ない)," "する," "すれ(ば)," せよ," "しろ," etc. are merged into the frequency of the morpheme of "為る." Likewise, the frequencies of "私," "わたし," "あたい," etc. are all merged into the frequency of the morpheme of "私." 6121JFIC adopts the POS tagging based on the UniDIC developed by National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL).

Number

The number of the data (concordance lines, word, collocates) to be shown at a time. You can choose from 20, 50, and 100. When you have many hits, you can also download the result directly to your desktop.

POS

Japanese POS (parts-of-speech) tagging was conducted on the UniDIC developed by National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL), while English POS tagging was conducted on the Sketch Engine System. The grammar rule adopted for tagging is English PennTB-Tree Tagger 2.0.

Statistics (Collocation Search)

In the results of a collocation search, you can choose one of the four stats and re-sort the important collocates based on it.
"Raw Frequency" is un-adjusted frequency. Syntactic, rather than semantic, collocations (such as "is a" and "think that") tend to be evaluated highly. As raw frequency is subject to corpus size, It is not appropriate to compare the raw frequencies obtained from two corpora of different sizes.

"t score" is originally a statistical value used to judge whether a collocation is statistically significant or not. However, it is also used as a general index showing the strength of collocation. Strictly speaking, significance of collocation and strength of collocation are not the same.

"Log-Likelihood" (aka G2 score) is the statistical value derived from a chi-squared value. Many studies suggest that Log-Likelihood is a well-balanced index when looking for important collocations.

"Mutual Information" (aka MI score) is a statistical value highly evaluating less frequent but peculiar and unique collocation. It is generally said that the words with 2 or higher MI values are the collocation of note.

Statistics (Keyword Search)

In the results of a collocation search, you can choose Chi2 or Log-Likelihood (see above) and re-sort the important keywords based on it.
"Chi2" (Chi squared value) is originally used when judging the difference in frequencies is statistically significant or not. A high Chi2 value suggests that a word appears extraordinarily more or less in a target corpus than in a reference corpus.

Please note that the these translations are the results of the two AI-based automatic translations. No manual edits are added. The corpus development team does NOT guarantee the precision of these translations.
